In a sharp escalation of political tensions, opposition parties on Sunday launched a fierce attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of shedding "crocodile tears" over the women's reservation issue and delivering what they termed a blatantly political speech disguised as a national address.
Congress Spokesperson Condemns PM's Remarks
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate highlighted that the Prime Minister spent 29 minutes on Doordarshan "spewing venom" against opposition parties. She raised serious questions about the propriety of using a taxpayer-funded platform for political purposes during the enforcement of the model code of conduct.
"How could the Prime Minister exploit this government machinery, funded by public money, to advance his political agenda when election rules are in full effect?" Shrinate demanded. "The Election Commission's failure to take suo motu cognizance of this clear violation raises serious concerns about institutional integrity."
CPM Files Formal Complaint with Election Commission
Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary MA Baby submitted a formal complaint to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging "serious violation" of electoral norms. In his detailed complaint, Baby argued that the address could not be classified as official government communication by any reasonable interpretation.
"The content, tone, and messaging of this address were unmistakably political in nature," Baby asserted. "It deliberately targeted opposition parties and appeared designed to influence public opinion, particularly among voters in crucial states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal."
CPI Joins Growing Opposition Protest
Adding to the mounting pressure, Communist Party of India Rajya Sabha MP Sandosh Kumar P also wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner, formally requesting a thorough investigation into what opposition parties characterize as a clear breach of election regulations.
