INDIA Bloc Leaders Unanimously Decide to Oppose Delimitation Legislation
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge declared on Wednesday that opposition parties, united under the INDIA alliance, have resolved to firmly oppose the proposed delimitation bill in Parliament. The announcement came after a crucial meeting of opposition leaders at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, signaling renewed coordination ahead of the parliamentary session beginning on April 16.
Kharge Outlines Opposition's Stance and Concerns
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kharge emphasized the bloc's collective position. "We are united and have decided to oppose the delimitation bill," he asserted, while expressing significant concerns over its potential to undermine democratic representation and federal principles.
Kharge clarified the opposition's nuanced position on related legislation: "We all are in favour of the Women's Reservation Bill. But the way in which they have brought it, we have reservations about that. It is politically motivated. Just to suppress the Opposition parties, the government is doing this. Though we have supported the Women's Reservation Bill continuously, we insist that the earlier amendments be implemented."
Accusations of Constitutional Overreach and Electoral Manipulation
The Congress leader accused the BJP-led government of employing questionable tactics regarding delimitation. "They are playing some tricks over delimitation. We all parties should unitedly fight in Parliament," Kharge stated. "We will oppose this bill, but we are not against the reservation for women. The way in which they have put in the bill, be it delimitation, they have not even cleared the census."
Kharge raised alarm about constitutional power dynamics: "All powers of the Constitution are being taken by the executive. Mostly, the power which can be exercised by the institutions, the parliament they have given is so that they can change delimitation at any time." He referenced previous controversies: "They have already deceived us in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir."
Broad Opposition Coalition and Regional Concerns
The gathering featured key figures from multiple opposition parties, including:
- Trinamool Congress
- Samajwadi Party
- Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)
- Aam Aadmi Party
Opposition leaders fear the delimitation bill—which aims to redraw parliamentary constituency boundaries—could disproportionately favor Hindi heartland states while diluting the political influence of southern and eastern states due to population disparities. This concern stems from the potential for what opposition parties describe as "electoral gerrymandering" that might alter the balance of power in Parliament.
Political Context and Escalating Tensions
The move comes amid escalating political tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties. Kharge directly accused the BJP-led government of pushing the delimitation measure to consolidate political power, warning that it poses a significant threat to India's federal structure and democratic principles.
The opposition's coordinated stance represents a strategic effort to rally against what they characterize as attempts to manipulate electoral boundaries for political advantage. With the parliamentary session approaching, this united front suggests intensified political battles over legislative proposals that could reshape India's electoral landscape for years to come.
