Opposition Parties Rally Against Proposed Lok Sabha Expansion, Label It 'Dangerous'
In a significant political development, opposition parties have declared their firm intention to vote against the constitutional amendment proposing an increase in Lok Sabha strength from 543 to 850 seats. They have characterized this move as "dangerous" and one that could severely diminish the representation of southern, north-western, north-eastern, and smaller states in Parliament.
Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Terms Delimitation 'Anti-National Act'
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi went a step further, branding the proposed delimitation an "anti-national act." The opposition coalition has raised serious concerns about the government's intent behind establishing a new delimitation commission. They pointed to instances of what they described as "politically motivated" and "communal" gerrymandering in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir, alleging that the commission would serve as a weapon for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Demand for Immediate Implementation of Women's Reservation
Simultaneously, the opposition has demanded that the Modi government immediately implement the 33% women's reservation in legislatures based on the current Lok Sabha strength of 543 seats. They advocate for following Article 334(a), which was passed unanimously in 2023. This provision stipulates that the women's quota will become operational after delimitation based on the 2027 Census.
Opposition leaders argued that Census data would be available by then, and delimitation within the existing 543 seats could be completed before the 2029 general elections. They criticized the government's proposal to rely on the 2011 Census data for the delimitation process, calling it outdated and inappropriate.
INDIA Bloc and Allies Finalize Joint Stand in Key Meeting
The INDIA bloc, along with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), convened at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's residence on Wednesday to solidify a unified position on the proposed bills, including those concerning delimitation and women's reservation. The meeting saw participation from a broad spectrum of parties:
- Samajwadi Party (SP)
- Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)
- Trinamool Congress (TMC)
- Shiv Sena
- Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
- National Conference
- Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP)
- Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML)
- Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)
- Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM)
- Communist Party of India (CPI)
Notably, Hemant Soren and Uddhav Thackeray joined the discussions remotely, underscoring the widespread opposition to the government's proposals.
Kharge Accuses Government of Politically Motivated Move
Flanked by prominent leaders including T R Baalu, Omar Abdullah, N K Premachandran, Supriya Sule, Ramashankar Rajbhar, Sagarika Ghose, Tejashwi Yadav, Sanjay Raut, Sanjay Singh, Annie Raja, Naseer Hussain, and Jairam Ramesh, Kharge stated, "We are for women's reservation, but delimitation is a politically motivated move to trap and suppress opposition parties." Congress MP K C Venugopal reinforced this stance, asserting, "We will certainly vote against delimitation."
Ensuring Full Opposition Presence During Voting
Sources indicated that Rahul Gandhi emphasized the necessity for all opposition MPs to be present during the voting process. While TMC's Sagarika Ghose reportedly mentioned that some members might be occupied with campaigning in West Bengal, several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, argued that abstention would effectively benefit the BJP.
DMK's T R Baalu conveyed that his party was scaling back campaigning in Tamil Nadu to ensure attendance. Uddhav Thackeray committed to speaking with Mamata Banerjee to secure full participation from their ranks. Parties such as Congress, DMK, SP, Shiv Sena, and NCP are expected to be present in full strength for the vote.
DMK Chief Stalin Announces Statewide Protests
DMK chief M K Stalin announced that across Tamil Nadu, black flags would be hoisted from homes and public spaces on April 16 in protest against the delimitation proposal. He declared, "Every south Indian south of the Vindhyas is seething with anger. BJP is playing with fire." This statement highlights the deep-seated resentment in southern states against the perceived marginalization.
Strategic Concerns and Warnings from Senior Leaders
Opposition leaders cautioned that the BJP might attempt to portray them as anti-women's quota, and they pledged to clarify their unwavering support for the reservation. Senior lawyer and MP Kapil Sibal issued a stark warning, suggesting that the proposed delimitation could potentially grant the BJP a future two-thirds majority in Parliament. Such a majority would enable the party to enact constitutional changes, raising alarms about the long-term implications of the delimitation exercise.
