The Patna High Court is set to welcome its second woman chief justice in history, as Chief Justice (designate) Meenakshi Madan Rai of the Sikkim High Court will take the oath of office on Friday, June 5.
Historical Milestone for Patna High Court
Justice Rai will succeed Justice Rekha Manharlal Doshit, who served as the first woman chief justice of the court from June 21, 2010, to December 12, 2014. This appointment marks a significant moment for the judiciary, reflecting the growing representation of women in top judicial positions.
Education and Early Career
Born on July 12, 1964, Justice Rai was educated at Downhill in Kurseong, Lady Shri Ram College, and the Campus Law Centre of Delhi University. She began practicing law in 1990 and joined the Sikkim judicial service in the same year. Her dedication and expertise quickly propelled her career forward.
Judicial Journey
In December 1990, she was appointed as District and Sessions Judge in East Gangtok. Her consistent performance led to her elevation to the Sikkim High Court, where she eventually became Chief Justice. Justice Rai's journey from a judicial officer to the chief justice of a high court serves as an inspiration for many aspiring legal professionals.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by dignitaries, legal luminaries, and members of the judiciary. This appointment underscores the commitment to gender diversity in the higher judiciary and sets a positive precedent for future appointments.
