Pawar-Shinde meeting sparks tension between allies

Meeting triggers political storm

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar held a meeting at Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's official residence on Wednesday, sparking a sharp reaction from ally Shiv Sena (UBT). The meeting has led to a war of words between the two ruling alliance partners, exposing fresh rifts within the Maha Vikas Aghadi.

Sanjay Raut’s sharp criticism

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said his party was “disturbed and hurt” by Pawar’s decision to meet Shinde in his office. “Such acts lower the credibility of a senior leader like him,” Raut told reporters on Thursday. He added that the meeting amounted to “glorification of traitors,” referring to Shinde’s 2022 rebellion that split the Shiv Sena.

NCP (SP) defends Pawar

Reacting to Raut’s comments, NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Crasto said, “Sharad Pawar is a seasoned politician who meets everyone. There is no need to read too much into it.” He accused the Shiv Sena (UBT) of overreacting and creating unnecessary tension within the alliance.

Background of the rift

The MVA comprises Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP), and Congress. Tensions have been simmering since Shinde’s split from the Shiv Sena in June 2022, which led to the fall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government. Pawar had previously maintained distance from Shinde, making Wednesday’s meeting significant.

Impact on alliance stability

Political analysts say the incident could further strain relations between the two allies ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. The Congress, the third partner, has so far remained silent on the issue. The MVA is already facing challenges in seat-sharing talks, and this fresh controversy may complicate negotiations.
