Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday called on the Kerala government to implement precautionary measures to prevent future wildlife attacks. Speaking to reporters after visiting a child injured in an elephant attack at Chinnakanal in Idukki district, Vijayan emphasized the need for a proactive approach to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.
Vijayan's Statement on Wildlife Safety
Vijayan expressed concern over the rising incidents of wildlife attacks in the state, particularly in forested regions. He stated that the government must take immediate steps to ensure the safety of residents living near wildlife habitats. The LoP highlighted the importance of early warning systems and better coordination between forest and local authorities.
Child Injured in Elephant Attack
The visit came after a child suffered injuries in an elephant attack earlier this week. Vijayan met the child and family, offering support and reassurance. He criticized the government for what he termed a lack of preparedness in handling such emergencies.
Kerala has witnessed several wildlife attacks in recent years, leading to demands for stronger preventive measures. Vijayan urged the government to invest in infrastructure like fences and barriers, as well as community awareness programs to reduce risks.
The opposition leader also called for compensation for victims and their families, noting that current relief measures are insufficient. He reiterated that the state must balance wildlife conservation with human safety.
