Pinarayi Vijayan Criticizes Centre, BJP Over Vande Mataram Row in Kerala Assembly
Pinarayi Vijayan Slams Centre, BJP on Vande Mataram Row

Kerala opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly criticized the Centre and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the recent Vande Mataram controversy that erupted in the state assembly. Speaking to the media, Vijayan alleged that the demand for a full rendition of the national song is part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) agenda and defended the partial performance that took place during the Governor’s address.

Background of the Controversy

The row began when the national song Vande Mataram was only partially sung during Governor Arlekar’s address to the Kerala Assembly. The BJP accused the assembly of insulting the national song by not rendering it in its entirety. The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the BJP exchanged sharp political attacks over issues of protocol, secularism, and historical usage of the song.

Vijayan’s Stance

Vijayan asserted that there is no need to sing the full version of Vande Mataram in the assembly, as the partial rendition is in line with the state’s secular traditions. He accused the BJP of trying to impose a majoritarian agenda through the RSS. “The demand for a full rendition is a deliberate attempt to polarize society and undermine the secular fabric of our state,” he said.

BJP’s Response

The BJP, however, maintained that the national song must be sung in its entirety as a mark of respect. Senior BJP leaders condemned the assembly’s action, calling it a deliberate insult to the nation. They demanded an apology from the state government and the Speaker.

Government Clarification

The Kerala state government clarified that it had no role in the organization of the event. According to officials, the programme was arranged by the Lok Bhavan authorities, and the government was not involved in the decision to shorten the rendition. The government reiterated its commitment to secularism and respect for all national symbols.

Political Reactions

The incident has sparked a heated political debate in the state, with the CPM and BJP trading allegations. The CPM accused the BJP of using the issue to divert attention from real problems facing the state, while the BJP accused the Left government of promoting anti-national sentiments. The controversy is expected to continue in the coming days, with both sides digging in their heels.
