PM Modi Launches Scathing Attack on Congress During Assam Rally
Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a sharp critique of the Congress party during a public address in Silchar, Assam, on Saturday, accusing the opposition of acting as a puppet for forces hostile to India's progress. Speaking on the second day of his visit to the northeastern state, the Prime Minister framed his remarks within the context of India's rapid development on the global stage.
Congress Accused of Being a 'Mere Puppet'
"The forces across the globe that are unable to digest India's rapid development, the Congress is increasingly becoming a mere puppet in the hands of these very forces," PM Modi stated emphatically. He suggested that international entities opposed to India's growth trajectory have found a willing instrument in the Congress party, which he implied is undermining national interests.
The Prime Minister further elaborated on historical grievances, particularly targeting Congress for what he described as decades of neglect toward the Barak Valley region following independence. He highlighted how the area once served as a crucial trade hub but suffered a severe setback due to post-independence border demarcations.
Historical Neglect of Barak Valley
"The Congress party had left the North East to its own fate. When the country attained independence, the Congress permitted the drawing of the boundary in such a manner that the Barak Valley's vital link to the sea was completely severed," PM Modi asserted. This move, he argued, effectively cut off the region from maritime trade routes, diminishing its economic strength and isolating it from broader development.
Contrasting this historical oversight, the Prime Minister emphasized the current efforts of the BJP's double-engine government—referring to both central and state administrations—to revitalize the region through enhanced infrastructure and connectivity initiatives.
Massive Infrastructure Push in the Northeast
During the event, PM Modi inaugurated projects totaling approximately Rs 24,000 crore in Silchar, with the centerpiece being the Shillong-Silchar high-speed corridor. This 166-kilometer corridor, involving an investment of around Rs 22,860 crore, is designed to significantly improve connectivity between Meghalaya and Assam, fostering economic integration and regional development.
In a pointed jab at Congress, the Prime Minister remarked, "Just ask the Congress leaders about this. Hand them a pen and paper, and ask them to write down Rs 24,000 crore, and they won't even be able to do it." This comment underscored his narrative of Congress's alleged incompetence and disconnect from large-scale development projects.
Political Context and Local Support
The rally held significant political weight as Assam prepares for upcoming elections. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the gathering, reinforced the pro-Modi sentiment, stating, "Elections in Assam are just around the corner. On behalf of the Barak Valley and the people of Assam, I wish to convey this message to the Prime Minister: The people of Assam will bring back the Modi government."
PM Modi's visit concluded with plans for a subsequent rally in Bengal later in the afternoon, indicating a busy schedule aimed at bolstering support in key eastern states. The address in Silchar not only highlighted infrastructure achievements but also set a confrontational tone against Congress, framing the upcoming electoral battle as a choice between development and stagnation.
