PM Modi Announces Historic Step for Women's Empowerment Ahead of Parliament Session
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Thursday to highlight a pivotal moment for women's empowerment in India, as lawmakers prepare for a special session of Parliament. In a post on X, he declared that the country is poised to take a historic step in this regard, with discussions centered on a crucial bill related to women's reservation.
Special Session Focuses on Women's Reservation Framework
The special session, scheduled from April 16 to 18, is expected to address an amendment aimed at implementing the women's reservation law. This legislation seeks to ensure one-third representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, with implementation targeted from the 2029 general elections. PM Modi emphasized the significance of this move, stating, "Starting today, in the special session of Parliament, our country is about to take a historic step towards women's empowerment. The respect for our mothers and sisters is the respect for the nation." His post also included a Sanskrit verse underscoring the role of women in dispelling ignorance and enlightening society with knowledge.
Government Seeks Broad Support for Legislative Reforms
The Centre is actively seeking broad political backing for this initiative. Earlier, PM Modi had urged opposition parties to support the amendment, framing it as a reflection of the aspirations of "every sister and daughter of this country." In addition to the women's reservation bill, the government plans to introduce key legislations during the session, including:
- The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026
- The Delimitation Bill, 2026
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Delimitation Proposal
While opposition parties have expressed support for the early implementation of women's reservation, they have raised significant concerns regarding the proposed delimitation exercise tied to these reforms. The Centre has proposed increasing Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850 as part of the broader reform package, sparking a wider political debate ahead of the session.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has voiced strong opposition to the delimitation proposal, calling for resistance against what he described as a move that could affect state representation. Opposition leaders are expected to convene to finalize their strategy for the session, with protests emerging in some states over these issues.
As the special Parliament session approaches, the focus remains on balancing the historic push for women's empowerment with the contentious delimitation reforms, setting the stage for intense political discussions and potential legislative milestones.
