PM Modi Addresses Retiring Rajya Sabha Members, Says Politics Has No Full Stop
In a significant parliamentary session, the Rajya Sabha bid farewell to 59 members who are completing their terms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a heartfelt address, emphasizing that in politics, there is no full stop, only new chapters awaiting these experienced leaders.
Modi's Message of Continuity and Service
Addressing the House, Prime Minister Modi highlighted how such occasions transcend partisan differences, fostering a shared sentiment of respect and camaraderie. "In politics, there is no full stop. The future awaits you, and your experience will remain part of our national life," Modi stated, urging the retiring members to remain active in public service.
He described Parliament as an open university, a place of continuous learning and contribution. Modi made special mention of senior MPs who have dedicated decades to parliamentary work, calling them stalwarts of Indian democracy.
Tributes to Senior Leaders
Modi praised the contributions of several retiring members, including:
- H D Deve Gowda: Former Prime Minister and veteran politician.
- Sharad Pawar: Senior leader and former Union minister.
- Mallikarjun Kharge: Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
He noted that these leaders have spent more than half their lives serving in Parliament, embodying dedication and experience. Modi also commended outgoing deputy chairman Harivansh for his role in parliamentary proceedings.
Lighter Moments and Calls for Reform
In a lighter vein, Mallikarjun Kharge humorously remarked that Deve Gowda once "loved" the Congress party but had "married" Modi, eliciting laughter from the House. This moment underscored the cordial atmosphere despite political differences.
Kharge also called for a review of parliamentary rules and an increase in the number of sittings, stressing that debate and discussion are vital for a healthy democracy. He emphasized the need for robust parliamentary engagement to address national issues effectively.
Emphasis on Bicameral System and New Beginnings
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of the bicameral system in strengthening decision-making and ensuring comprehensive legislative scrutiny. He reiterated that the retirement of members marks not an end, but the beginning of new roles where their expertise can continue to benefit the nation.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan echoed this sentiment, stating that retirement signifies the start of fresh responsibilities and opportunities for contribution beyond Parliament.
The farewell session served as a reminder of the enduring spirit of public service and the collective commitment to democratic values, transcending political affiliations.
