Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday marked the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, paying tribute to the 26 victims and reaffirming India's unwavering stance against terrorism. In a statement, Modi said, "As a nation, we stand united in grief and resolve. India will never bow to any form of terror. The heinous designs of terrorists will never succeed."
Remembering the Victims
The attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, at a tourist spot in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, shocked the nation. Twenty-six people, including tourists and locals, were killed when terrorists opened fire indiscriminately. The incident was one of the deadliest in the region in recent years.
Modi's remarks came during a solemn ceremony held in New Delhi, where he laid a wreath and observed a moment of silence. He emphasized that the nation's collective memory of the tragedy would fuel its determination to combat terrorism. "Every life lost is a scar on our conscience, but also a reminder of our duty to protect our citizens," he added.
Congress Takes a Dig at Modi's Foreign Policy
The Congress party, however, used the occasion to criticize the Modi government's foreign policy, particularly its handling of relations with Pakistan. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, "While the Prime Minister speaks of resolve, his government's diplomatic failures have only emboldened terrorist outfits. The Pahalgam attack could have been prevented with stronger international pressure on Pakistan."
Khera also questioned the effectiveness of Modi's outreach to global powers, alleging that India's stance on terrorism has not translated into concrete action. "The world talks, but India acts alone. We need a foreign policy that isolates Pakistan, not one that gives it room to maneuver," he stated.
Security Measures and Aftermath
In the aftermath of the attack, the government intensified security in tourist areas across Jammu and Kashmir. The Ministry of Home Affairs deployed additional paramilitary forces and implemented stricter background checks for visitors. Intelligence agencies also stepped up surveillance of suspected militant networks.
Despite these measures, opposition parties have continued to demand a more comprehensive strategy to address terrorism in the region. The Pahalgam attack remains a focal point in political debates, with both the ruling party and the opposition using it to advance their narratives.
As the nation remembers the tragedy, the Prime Minister's message of resilience and the Congress's critique highlight the ongoing political divide over counter-terrorism and foreign policy. The anniversary serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of terrorism and the challenges India faces in ensuring security for all its citizens.
