Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting Sikkim's development for decades. Speaking at a public rally in Gangtok, Modi highlighted his government's commitment to the northeastern state through the vision of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' (One India, Best India).
Modi's Remarks on Sikkim's Progress
The Prime Minister asserted that while previous Congress-led governments paid lip service to the region, his administration has delivered tangible results. 'For years, Sikkim was kept on the back burner. The Congress party never prioritized the needs of the people here. But we have changed that,' Modi said. He cited infrastructure projects, including improved road connectivity and the expansion of healthcare facilities, as evidence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government's focus on Sikkim.
'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' Vision
Modi emphasized that the 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' initiative, launched in 2015, aims to foster unity and cultural exchange across India. 'This vision is not just a slogan; it is a roadmap for inclusive development. We want every state, including Sikkim, to prosper and contribute to the nation's growth,' he explained. The program promotes pairing of states and union territories to facilitate mutual learning and awareness of diverse traditions.
Congress Accused of Hypocrisy
The Prime Minister did not mince words when criticizing the Congress party's track record in Sikkim. 'They talk about development, but when in power, they ignored the region. Their policies were driven by vote-bank politics, not genuine concern for the people,' Modi charged. He pointed to the lack of basic amenities in remote areas during Congress rule, contrasting it with the current government's efforts to bridge the gap.
Development Initiatives in Sikkim
Modi listed several key projects undertaken by his government in Sikkim, including the establishment of a new medical college, the expansion of the state's tourism sector, and the implementation of digital connectivity programs. 'We are working to ensure that Sikkim becomes a hub for eco-tourism and organic farming, leveraging its unique strengths,' he said. The Prime Minister also praised the state's efforts in environmental conservation, aligning with the national goal of sustainable development.
Political Reactions
The Congress party swiftly responded to Modi's allegations. Sikkim Congress spokesperson Tenzing Wangchuk accused the Prime Minister of 'politicizing development' and claimed that the BJP had failed to fulfill its promises. 'The people of Sikkim are not fooled by empty rhetoric. The Congress has always stood for the state's interests,' Wangchuk said. However, local BJP leaders expressed confidence that Modi's message resonated with voters, especially the youth.
Looking Ahead
As the 2026 assembly elections in Sikkim approach, political analysts believe development will be a key battleground. 'Modi's emphasis on infrastructure and unity could sway undecided voters,' said political commentator Dr. Ramesh Gupta. 'But the Congress remains a strong contender, especially in rural areas where traditional loyalties persist.' The rally in Gangtok marked the beginning of the BJP's campaign for the upcoming polls, with Modi expected to visit the state again in the coming months.
