PM Modi's Blistering Attack on Congress in Assam as Campaign Concludes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his election campaign in Assam on Monday with a fiery series of rallies, launching a scathing assault on the Gandhi family and the Congress party. Addressing large crowds in Barpeta, Hojai, and Dibrugarh just before the campaign silence period began, Modi accused the opposition of corruption, dynastic politics, and aligning with Pakistan's interests.
Corruption and Dynastic Politics Allegations
Modi declared, "The first family of Congress is the most corrupt in the country, involved in massive scams and currently out on bail. Congress can only do two things—tell lies and indulge in corruption." He specifically targeted Rahul Gandhi's "mohabbat ki dukaan" (shop of love) slogan, countering that Congress was actually a "mithya ki dukaan" (shop of lies) and a symbol of "apmaan" (insult).
The Prime Minister also referenced what he called "another family in Assam," apparently pointing to Congress deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi, who heads the party's state unit. "Both families are making false promises ahead of the polls," Modi asserted.
Land Acquisition Controversy
Modi addressed land issues directly, accusing the Gandhi family of holding prime land in Delhi through entities like National Herald and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust. "While Congress alleges BJP acquires land from people, they remain silent about these prime Delhi properties," he stated. In contrast, Modi emphasized that BJP's land acquisitions were for state development benefiting all societal sections, adding, "They are now talking about land that has shifted from beneath their feet."
National Security and Pakistan Connection
The Prime Minister delivered one of his most serious allegations, claiming Congress had consistently echoed Pakistan's agenda during critical military operations. "While my government carried out 'Operation Sindoor,' Congress continued to sing to Pakistan's tune," Modi said, referencing the 2016 surgical strikes and 2025 operation. "This Pakistan connection always weighs heavily on the country, and we can never allow that."
Modi further accused Congress of neglecting armed forces by delaying the One Rank, One Pension scheme for decades, contrasting this with BJP's implementation that has disbursed Rs 1.24 lakh crore to veterans.
Development Achievements and Regional Focus
Highlighting BJP's development record, Modi pointed to the emergency landing facility at Moran where fighter jets can now land on highways. He accused Congress of neglecting upper Assam and Barak Valley while emphasizing BJP's work granting land rights to tea garden workers.
"During my last Dibrugarh visit, I interacted with women tea garden workers, but to insult me, they made fun of their dress and culture," Modi recalled, showcasing what he described as Congress's disrespect for local traditions.
Land Rights and Encroachment Issues
The Prime Minister accused Congress of aiding infiltrators for vote-bank politics, allowing settlements on lands belonging to sattras, temples, tribal communities, and Kaziranga National Park. "BJP is freeing these lands from encroachers and giving land rights to indigenous people," he asserted.
National Initiatives and Welfare Measures
On broader national issues, Modi said his government was protecting citizens from West Asia conflict impacts and announced that 33% women's reservation in Parliament would be implemented from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. "A special parliamentary session on April 16 will discuss this. Assam women should urge all parties to ensure the bill's passage," he stated.
Listing welfare achievements, Modi noted the minimum support price for paddy had increased from Rs 1,300 per quintal in 2013 to Rs 2,370 currently, with Assam's Joha rice now being exported to Europe. "Farmers' income is rising, and BJP directly transfers money to their accounts, bypassing middlemen," he emphasized.
Final Appeal to Voters
Asserting that peace and development in Assam must continue, Modi urged voters to keep Congress out of power. Polling for Assam's 126 assembly constituencies will occur on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
