PM Modi to Lead High-Level Review of India's Energy Preparedness Amid Escalating Middle East Crisis
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a critical high-level meeting on Sunday evening to comprehensively review India's energy preparedness as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East region. Senior ministers are set to assess the situation across crucial sectors including petroleum, power, and fertilisers, according to PTI reports citing government sources.
Focus on Uninterrupted Supply and Stable Logistics
The meeting will concentrate on ensuring uninterrupted energy supply, maintaining stable logistics networks, and facilitating efficient distribution across the entire country. Officials emphasized that continuous monitoring of global developments remains an absolute priority to protect both consumer and industry interests during the ongoing international crisis.
On March 12, Prime Minister Modi had declared that the war in West Asia has triggered a worldwide energy crisis, describing it as a "critical test of national character" that requires handling the situation with peace, patience, and greater public awareness. The prime minister had also stressed that the government is working relentlessly to address disruptions in international supply chains.
"Continuous efforts are also underway to determine how we can overcome the disruptions that have occurred in the supply chain," Modi had stated during his earlier address on the matter.
Background of the Escalating Conflict
The current conflict, now entering its third week, began on February 28 with attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. The situation has since escalated dramatically, with Iran retaliating against Israel and several Gulf neighbors. Iran's strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route for energy supplies, has significantly impacted maritime movement, with only limited ships currently allowed to pass through this crucial waterway.
The resulting blockade has disrupted energy supplies to multiple countries worldwide, including India, which relies heavily on energy imports from the region. Since the conflict began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged in extensive diplomatic outreach, holding telephonic conversations with numerous global leaders including those from:
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
- Qatar
- Bahrain
- Kuwait
- Jordan
- France
- Malaysia
- Israel
- Iran
The government's proactive approach reflects India's strategic commitment to energy security and economic stability during this period of international uncertainty. The Sunday meeting represents the latest in a series of coordinated efforts to safeguard national interests while navigating complex global energy dynamics.
