Pralhad Joshi accuses Congress of shielding infiltrators
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday slammed the Karnataka Congress government for allegedly attempting to protect infiltrators by questioning the Election Commission's list of valid address proof documents. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Joshi said the state government's move was a clear attempt to shield illegal immigrants.
Only 11 documents valid as per EC
The Election Commission had specified that only 11 documents, including Aadhaar, passport, and voter ID, would be considered valid proof of address for voter registration. The Karnataka government had raised objections, arguing that the list was restrictive and could disenfranchise many citizens.
Joshi's strong response
Joshi countered, saying, "The Congress government is trying to protect infiltrators by challenging the EC's directive. This is unacceptable." He emphasized that the EC's list was comprehensive and aimed at ensuring the integrity of the electoral roll.
Political implications
The controversy has sparked a political row, with the BJP accusing the Congress of being soft on illegal immigration. The Congress, however, maintains that its concern is for the rights of genuine citizens who may lack the specified documents.
