Priyanka Gandhi's Sharp Chanakya Reference Targets BJP in Lok Sabha Women's Reservation Debate

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a pointed critique against the Central government in the Lok Sabha on Thursday during discussions on the proposed women's reservation bill. Her remarks, which included a sharp reference to the ancient strategist Chanakya, elicited laughter from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other members of the treasury bench, highlighting the tense yet theatrical atmosphere of the parliamentary session.

Questioning the Timing and Intent of the Women's Reservation Bill

While expressing support for the principle of reserving seats for women legislators, Priyanka Gandhi clarified that her party was not opposing women's representation itself. Instead, she raised concerns about what she described as the political intent behind the timing and framing of the bill. She argued that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was employing the measure as an electoral strategy rather than as a purely reform-driven step aimed at genuine empowerment.

In her speech, Priyanka also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's earlier address, where he praised the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) record on women's empowerment. She alleged that the government was weakening constitutional principles while simultaneously presenting itself as a champion of women's rights, creating a contradiction in its actions and rhetoric.

Chanakya Quip Draws Laughter and Highlights Political Cleverness

As laughter erupted from the BJP benches during her speech, Priyanka Gandhi responded with a pointed quip, noting that the ruling side appeared thoroughly prepared for the debate. She remarked that even Chanakya, the renowned ancient Indian philosopher and political strategist, would be astonished by their political cleverness if he were alive today.

"If Chanakya had been alive today, he would have been surprised after seeing the BJP's conspiracy to win elections," Priyanka stated, emphasizing her view that the bill's introduction was strategically timed for electoral gains rather than substantive reform.

Prime Minister Modi's Assurance on Delimitation and State Justice

Earlier in the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed concerns related to the Delimitation Bill, 2026, which was discussed alongside the women's reservation bill. He sought to allay fears that northern states might gain at the expense of southern Indian states during the delimitation process.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister gave a firm guarantee, stating, "I give guarantee no injustice will be done to any state—from East to West, North to South." This assurance aimed to mitigate regional anxieties and emphasize the government's commitment to equitable treatment across all states in the delimitation exercise.

The parliamentary debate thus underscored the complex interplay of political strategy, constitutional principles, and regional dynamics, with Priyanka Gandhi's Chanakya reference serving as a memorable highlight in the ongoing discussions on women's representation and electoral reforms.
