Puducherry Assembly Elections 2026: Polling Commences Across All 30 Seats
Voting for the Puducherry Assembly elections 2026 is currently in progress, marking a crucial democratic exercise in the Union Territory. Polling began at 7 am on April 9 across all 30 constituencies, including the enclaves of Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. A total of 294 candidates are in the fray, with approximately 9.5 lakh eligible voters set to cast their ballots to determine the electoral outcome.
Election Arrangements and Security Measures
Chief Electoral Officer P. Jawahar has confirmed that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and peaceful polling process. The Union Territory has 1,099 polling stations, out of which 209 have been identified as vulnerable. To enhance inclusivity and security, 30 polling stations are being managed exclusively by women staff, while 15 booths are operated by young officers. Additionally, two polling stations are managed by persons with disabilities.
Special provisions have been implemented to assist senior citizens, differently-abled voters, and first-time voters. Volunteers are available at booths to help these groups reach polling stations and return home safely, with wheelchairs provided for accessibility. The election authorities have engaged 2,200 young voters to support these efforts.
Security has been intensified, with central forces deployed in sensitive areas. Drone surveillance has been utilized for monitoring purposes, leading to seizures of cash worth Rs 77.25 lakh and liquor valued at Rs 68.50 lakh. Seventeen cases have been registered for alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct, and 24 individuals have been booked for distributing cash to lure voters.
Political Landscape and Key Contests
The election is shaping up as a high-stakes battle between the AINRC–BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), headed by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, and the Congress–DMK alliance. The spotlight is particularly on the Thattanchavady constituency, where Rangasamy is facing a tough challenge from former Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam.
Key issues dominating the election include the long-pending demand for statehood, high unemployment rates, and water contamination in the Puducherry district, which holds 23 of the 30 seats. The emergence of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a wildcard could potentially sway results, adding an element of unpredictability to the contest.
Campaign Promises and Political Rhetoric
During the campaign, Union Minister and BJP election in-charge for Puducherry, JP Nadda, outlined the NDA’s vision for development. He promised two free gas cylinders per year—one on Pongal and another on Vinayaka Chaturthi—along with e-scooters for meritorious 12th-class students, 30 water ATMs across the UT, and 10,000 scholarships of Rs 10,000 each. Nadda emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra for Puducherry: “B for Business, E for Education, S for Spiritualism, T for Tourism.”
Nadda also criticized the previous Congress-DMK government, labeling it as corrupt and mismanaged, and accused it of allowing drug mafias to thrive and making streets unsafe. He claimed that law and order were restored only after the NDA took charge.
Historical Context and Statehood Debate
The statehood issue has taken center stage in this election. Puducherry, a former French colony, consists of four districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. It was transferred to India on a de facto basis in November 1954 and formally became part of the Indian Union in August 1962, gaining Union Territory status in July 1963. Since then, the power imbalance between the lieutenant governor and the elected chief minister has frequently led to clashes, fueling the demand for full statehood.
Voting Process and Future Steps
Polling is being conducted across thousands of polling stations, with elaborate arrangements to ensure voter participation. The election authorities have reported that 24,919 new voters are registered for this election. Voting will continue throughout the day, with counting scheduled for May 4. The outcome of this election is eagerly awaited, as it will determine the political direction of Puducherry for the next term.
In summary, the Puducherry Assembly elections 2026 are witnessing a closely contested battle with significant voter turnout and robust security measures. The results will hinge on key local issues and the performance of major political alliances, setting the stage for a decisive political shift in the Union Territory.
