Puducherry NDA Alliance Finalizes Crucial Seat-Sharing Pact

In a significant political development, the All India NR Congress (AINRC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have successfully concluded their seat-sharing negotiations for the upcoming Puducherry elections. The agreement, finalized on Friday, resolves the prolonged contention surrounding the inclusion of Jose Charles Martin's Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold.

Seat Distribution Details and Alliance Structure

According to the newly minted arrangement, the electoral battlefield will be divided as follows:

  • AINRC will contest in 16 assembly constituencies.
  • The BJP and its allied parties will compete for the remaining 14 seats.

Within the BJP's quota, the party has strategically allocated seats to its partners:

  2. AIADMK will receive 2 seats.
  3. Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) has been allotted 2 seats.

High-Level Intervention and Leadership Statements

AINRC founder and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who had initially opposed LJK's induction into the NDA, ultimately acquiesced following direct intervention from the BJP's high command in New Delhi. Rangasamy personally met with Union Minister and BJP election in-charge for Puducherry, Mansukh Mandaviya, at a hotel to seal the deal.

Addressing reporters alongside Mandaviya after the meeting, Rangasamy emphatically stated, "We are firmly in the NDA. There is no change in our stance. We will face this election together." He further revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had personally counseled him, asserting that LJK's inclusion would substantially strengthen the coalition. "Based on that advice, the new party is now part of the alliance," Rangasamy added.

NDA Leadership and Campaign Promises

Mandaviya reaffirmed Rangasamy's position as the leader of the NDA in Puducherry, confirming that the election campaign will be conducted under his leadership. Regarding AINRC's longstanding demand for statehood for Puducherry, Mandaviya indicated that the NDA's poll manifesto would address this critical issue. He also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are scheduled to visit Puducherry to spearhead the alliance's election campaign.

Nomination Filings and Opposition Dynamics

In a parallel development, Chief Minister Rangasamy has filed his nomination papers to contest from two constituencies: Thattanchavady and Mangalam. Meanwhile, the opposition DMK-Congress front has yet to finalize its own seat-sharing agreement, potentially giving the NDA a strategic advantage in early campaign preparations.

This seat-sharing pact marks a pivotal moment for the NDA in Puducherry, consolidating its alliance structure and setting the stage for a highly contested election. The resolution of internal disagreements, particularly over LJK's inclusion, demonstrates the BJP's central role in mediating and unifying coalition partners ahead of the polls.
