Pune Crime Rate Declines: CP Kumar Clarifies to Sule

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Monday clarified to Baramati MP Supriya Sule that the law and order situation in Pune has improved this year. In a detailed letter, Kumar submitted statistics showing a decline in murders, murder attempts, body offences, and other crimes in 2025 and 2026. He refuted claims that Pune is the crime capital of Maharashtra, stating that the city ranks 15th among 19 metropolitan cities in IPC/BNS crimes, according to National Crime Records Bureau data.

Crime Statistics for 2025

According to the commissioner's letter, fewer crimes were recorded in 2025 compared to 2024. Attempt-to-murder cases declined by approximately 27%, body offences by 3%, chain snatching and robbery dropped by 56% and 36% respectively. House-breaking and theft cases reduced by 14% and 24% respectively. However, there was an increase of six murder cases in 2025, which Kumar attributed to family disputes.

Police Response and 2026 Trends

The Pune police claim to have responded promptly to serious crimes, ensuring survival of critically injured victims in firing incidents and other cases in Kothrud, Warje, and Bund Garden. The first four months of 2026 were relatively peaceful, though five serious crimes occurred within 10 days in May. Kumar noted a 50% reduction in vandalism and vehicle damage incidents in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, crediting awareness programmes for juveniles, GPS-based night patrolling, and increased police visibility.
