Punjab Congress Chief to File PIL Against 'Lawrence of Punjab' Docuseries
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring declared on Tuesday that he will file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the upcoming docuseries titled 'Lawrence of Punjab', which is based on the life of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Warring expressed strong opposition to the series, arguing that it glorifies criminal elements and tarnishes the true identity of Punjab.
Warring's Criticism on Social Media
Taking to X, Warring voiced his disapproval, stating that a gangster should never represent Punjab. He shared a personal connection, mentioning the loss of his friend, Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, to Lawrence Bishnoi's gang. "I lost my friend Sidhu Moosewala to Lawrence Bishnoi's gang. His death was a loss for each and every Punjabi, for millions of his fans around the world," he wrote.
Warring emphasized that the series is not just about Moosewala but affects many families. "Hundreds of Punjabis have lost their lives to this network of crime. Countless families are still grieving. Still bleeding. This TV Series is not content. This is a slap on every one of us," he added. He highlighted that Punjab's identity should be rooted in figures like Bhagat Singh, soldiers, and farmers, not criminals. "I am filing a PIL. This series must be banned. Enough is enough," he concluded.
Details of the Docuseries
Meanwhile, the makers have announced the release date for 'Lawrence of Punjab', set to premiere on April 27. Produced by Riverland Entertainment and directed by Raghav Darr, the docuseries aims to trace the evolution of Lawrence Bishnoi's criminal identity through cultural, systemic, and visibility lenses.
According to a press note from the producers, the series explores how criminal identities are shaped by various factors. "Lawrence of Punjab traces the journey of a criminal identity through the lens of culture, systems, and visibility. From student politics and music to ideology and media amplification, the series pieces together how aspiration, power, and perception intersect to shape a new-age digital syndicate," the note stated.
The narrative uses Lawrence Bishnoi as a key case study to examine broader cultural and social contexts, focusing on the consequences of such criminal networks. The trailer has been released, offering a gripping preview of the story.
Background on Sidhu Moosewala's Murder
Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, was tragically shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jawaharke village of Mansa district on May 29, 2022. Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, a close aide of gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for the murder in a Facebook post, linking the crime to Bishnoi's network.
This incident has fueled public outrage and concerns over the glorification of criminals in media, prompting Warring's legal action against the docuseries.
