Punjab Congress Grapples with Internal Divisions Over Suicide Probe Demands

The Punjab Congress is embroiled in political controversy as its leaders express conflicting demands regarding the investigation into the suicide of Punjab State Warehousing Corporation district manager Gagandeep Singh Randhawa. Despite the party's assertion of a coordinated strategy for justice, the differing stances have sparked perceptions of disunity within its ranks.

MPs Push for CBI Inquiry After Meeting with Amit Shah

The issue gained significant momentum when four out of seven Congress MPs from Punjab—Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Gurjit Singh Aujla, Charanjit Singh Channi, and Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi—met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They raised serious concerns over Randhawa's death and formally requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry. This move followed Shah's assurance to consider transferring the probe to the CBI, provided a written request was submitted.

Opposition Leaders Advocate for Court-Monitored Investigation

In contrast, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring have called for a court-monitored investigation. This divergence has led to widespread speculation that the party lacks a unified approach. Bajwa, however, dismissed suggestions of internal division, emphasizing that the Congress remains united in its pursuit of justice for Gagandeep Singh Randhawa. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of promoting a false, binary narrative to mislead the public, asserting that the reality is far more nuanced.

Bajwa Explains Multi-Layered Strategy for Accountability

Bajwa clarified that the MPs' demand for a CBI inquiry was made through constitutional channels in Parliament, as it is the formal route to seek such an investigation. He noted that one cannot simultaneously request the Home Minister to order a probe while questioning his credibility in the same forum. To address concerns about potential influence, Bajwa revealed that he, as Leader of the Opposition, wrote to the Chief Justice of India seeking a court-monitored investigation. This, he described, is part of a multi-layered strategy designed to ensure independence, transparency, and freedom from interference in any CBI probe.

Warring Clarifies Stance on Judicial Oversight

Warring further clarified his position, stating that he has not opposed the CBI inquiry but insists it must be conducted under the supervision of a sitting high court or Supreme Court judge. He expressed skepticism about the CBI's effectiveness, citing its poor record in concluding cases and loss of credibility under the BJP regime. Warring explained that he did not sign the MPs' letter due to his absence in Delhi on the day, as he was in Khatkar Kalan for Bhagat Singh's martyrdom day. He also disclosed that MP Gurjit Singh Aujla demanded an NIA inquiry based on family revelations that Gagandeep had been threatened by gangsters.

Warring reiterated that all Congress members desire justice for the family, emphasizing that judicial oversight is crucial to prevent manipulation. He accused the BJP and AAP of collusion, justifying his insistence on court monitoring as a safeguard against political interference.

BJP and SAD Leaders Target Warring Over Probe Stance

BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Railways & Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu expressed great concern, alleging that Warring opposes the CBI probe. Bittu claimed the demand originated from the victim's family, not the BJP, and accused the Congress of becoming subservient to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Similarly, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, in a written statement, accused Warring of aiding the Punjab government and the CM by deviating from the party's position. Majithia asserted that while Bajwa supports a CBI inquiry, Warring's contrary stand helps suppress a sensitive case.

The ongoing debate highlights the complex political dynamics in Punjab, with the Congress navigating internal pressures while facing external criticism from rival parties over its handling of the investigation into Gagandeep Singh Randhawa's tragic death.
