Rahul Gandhi Launches Fierce Attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi delivered a blistering critique of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a Sunday election rally in Biswanath, Assam. Gandhi branded Sarma as "the most corrupt and hate-spreading Chief Minister of India" and issued a stark warning about potential legal consequences.
Corruption Allegations and Legal Threats
Gandhi asserted that Congress party members, whom he referred to as "Babbar Shers" (Lions), would ensure Sarma faces imprisonment. "He knows the 'Babbar Shers' of the Congress party are going to put him in jail," Gandhi declared to the assembled crowd.
The opposition leader intensified his allegations by claiming Sarma had involved his family in corrupt activities. "He also made a blunder by including his family in the corruption, now even his family will get accused," Gandhi stated, suggesting comprehensive legal action would follow a Congress victory.
Congress Election Promises for Assam
Beyond the criticism, Gandhi outlined several key commitments from the Congress manifesto for Assam:
- Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe status for six communities in Assam
- Rs 450 daily wage for tea plantation workers
- Monthly cash transfers to every woman's bank account without conditions
- Rs 50,000 business startup assistance for aspiring entrepreneurs
"We are clearly saying that we will give SC/ST status to Assam's 6 communities. We have also clearly mentioned in the manifesto that we will give Rs 450 per day to the tea workers," Gandhi emphasized during his address.
Governance Critique and Central Control Allegations
Gandhi extended his criticism to the central government, alleging that Assam's administration is being remotely controlled from New Delhi. "Donald Trump controls Narendra Modi, and Narendra Modi and Amit Shah control your CM. Assam is run from Delhi," he claimed, drawing a controversial parallel with international politics.
Commitment to Swift Action and Unity
The Congress leader promised rapid implementation of these policies if his party secures power in the state assembly. "As soon as we form the government in Assam, we will implement the six decisions taken for Assam," Gandhi assured voters.
He specifically mentioned the Zubeen Garg case, vowing that "within 100 days, we will punish the accused" and ensure appropriate legal action is taken.
Philosophical Contrast with BJP
Invoking the legacy of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, Gandhi contrasted Congress's approach with what he characterized as divisive BJP politics. "Zubeen Garg worked his entire life to unite people of Assam, he never misbehaved with anyone. The Congress philosophy is also like that, to spread love against hatred," he explained.
Gandhi remained uncompromising about potential consequences for Sarma, stating that "legal action will follow even if he asks for forgiveness" after Congress forms government.
Election Timeline
The political confrontation occurs against the backdrop of impending state assembly elections in Assam, scheduled for April 9 with results declaration on May 4. These elections will determine whether Congress can translate its promises and criticisms into electoral success against the incumbent BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
