Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed strong support for the DMK, stating he can vouch that the party will stand with the opposition to defend the “idea of India.” This rare remark comes after the Congress severed ties with the DMK following recent state elections in Tamil Nadu.
During the INDIA bloc meeting on Monday, Gandhi briefly referenced the DMK while accusing the BJP of orchestrating a campaign to portray the opposition as divided. The Congress later released excerpts of his speech on Friday.
Gandhi also warned allies about the post-Iran situation, describing it as “uncontrollable” and suggesting it would create an opportunity to mobilize the masses. He asserted that the BJP cannot win the next elections, which he claims are “already won” due to public anger, but cautioned that the elections would not be free and fair.
Alleging that the BJP steals elections, Gandhi said he had warned “friends in TMC,” who were confident of sweeping the Bengal polls, that they were in “dreamland.” He cited examples from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and Maharashtra to support his claim.
He questioned SP, TMC, and RJD for believing the system is still fair, emphasizing that there is no longer a level playing field because “BJP controls institutions of the state — legal system, bureaucracy, intelligence agencies, and EC.” Gandhi alleged that the BJP and RSS are tightening their grip on the state, and no instrument will work in the future.
Describing the Congress as a “resistance movement” that predates modern India and was not built using the protection of the Indian state like other parties, Gandhi said, “If political parties cannot function, what functions? Resistance functions. Resistance works. Wherever we resist, it works.”
LoP Slams PM’s ‘Silence’ on US Ship Attacks
Rahul Gandhi also criticized Prime Minister Modi for his silence over the US attacks on ships that killed three Indians. He claimed the PM is “compromised” and lacks the courage to displease the forces responsible for the deaths of “sons of Mother India.”
“When any foreign power murders an Indian, PM has to speak up. But there is no way this PM will utter a word,” Gandhi said. He added, “Next week at the G7 summit...Modi will smile, embrace, and sign agreements — but for those three Indians, he won’t have a word to spare,” referring to the likely meeting between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump.
