Rahul Gandhi: Delimitation Bill is BJP's Electoral Map Manipulation

Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP of Electoral Map Manipulation Through Delimitation Bill

In a scathing critique delivered on Friday, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi alleged that the constitutional amendment bill on delimitation represents a deliberate attempt by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to fundamentally alter India's electoral landscape. Gandhi asserted that this move is being camouflaged under the banner of women's reservation in legislatures, driven by the governing party's fear of losing political power.

Calling It an Anti-National Act

Gandhi characterized the bill as an anti-national act, claiming it systematically denies rights to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) while stripping representation from southern and north-eastern states. He emphasized that this legislation is specifically designed to bypass the caste census, which he believes would reveal the harsh and unrelenting treatment endured by OBCs, Dalits, minorities, and women throughout Indian society.

"It is a historical fact how Indian society treated Dalits and OBCs and their women," Gandhi stated. "What is being attempted here is a bypass of the caste census. They are trying to avoid giving power and representation to my OBC brothers and sisters and instead take power away from them."

Conditional Support and Accusations

The Congress leader clarified that his party is prepared to vote in favor of the amendment bill, but only if the government implements the original 2023 Act. He accused the BJP of practicing "Manuvaad over Samvidhaan" (Manusmriti over Constitution), highlighting a perceived prioritization of traditional hierarchical norms over constitutional principles.

Gandhi further accused the BJP of neglecting OBCs and Dalits, remarking, "You call them 'Hindus', but you don't give them any space in the power structure." He insisted that the bill has no genuine connection to women's empowerment, labeling it instead as a strategic maneuver to reconfigure the country's electoral map while exploiting the cause of Indian women as a shield.

Dangerous Implications and Historical Context

Describing the delimitation bill as both "dangerous" and "anti-national," Gandhi argued it stems from the BJP's apprehension about electoral losses. "You are now trying to rejig India's political map," he told the BJP, citing alleged precedents where delimitation was leveraged to benefit the party in Jammu & Kashmir and Assam. He vowed that Congress would staunchly oppose such plans.

Gandhi concluded with a pointed critique of the BJP's mindset, stating, "There is a fundamental confusion in the minds of BJP. They think they are the people of India and armed forces," urging the party to cease hiding behind the populace and military forces. This comprehensive condemnation underscores the escalating political tensions surrounding electoral reforms and representation in India.
