Rahul Gandhi Frames Election as Ideological Clash in Kanyakumari Speech
In a fiery address in Kanyakumari on Monday, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi declared the upcoming election a fundamental ideological battle between the Congress-DMK alliance and the BJP-RSS. Speaking at a public rally to support Congress and DMK candidates, Gandhi emphasized that India is a "union of states" where every language, culture, and tradition deserves equal respect.
Accusations of Identity Imposition and Proxy Rule
Rahul Gandhi asserted that the BJP is attempting to enforce a singular identity from Delhi, contrary to the alliance's belief in state autonomy. He stated, "We believe every state of India should have its own voice and representation, and the people of each state should run the state. However, BJP believes one tradition, one language, and one history should overcome all other traditions, languages, and histories." He added, "We want Tamil Nadu to be run by the people of Tamil Nadu, and they should decide its future."
Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the BJP's relationship with AIADMK, claiming the party has been "captured" by the BJP. He described AIADMK, once pivotal to Tamil Nadu's progress, as now a hollow shell used as an instrument for BJP's entry into the state. "The leadership of AIADMK surrendered to BJP because of corruption, and RSS is planning and trying to rule Tamil Nadu by proxy," he alleged. He further drew a controversial comparison, saying, "The PM wants to control Tamil Nadu through AIADMK the same way as US President Donald Trump controls Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi."
Defense of Tamil Heritage and Criticism of Electoral Plans
Rahul Gandhi positioned the DMK-Congress alliance as defenders of Tamil language, culture, and history against the RSS, which he claimed "hates the Dravidian idea." He praised Tamils for their resilience, stating, "They know that brave Tamils can challenge and resist them, and they also know that Tamil people never knowingly surrender to them."
He also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's women's reservation bill, alleging it was a cover for a deeper plan to alter India's electoral structure. "What they wanted to do was to reduce the number of seats in southern, northeastern, and smaller states and fundamentally change the balance of power in India," Gandhi explained. He labeled this an action against the union of states and noted its defeat in Parliament.
National Ideological Struggle and Personal Commitment
Gandhi framed the conflict as a national-level ideological struggle between BJP and Congress, expressing confidence that Congress ideology would ultimately prevail. He voiced concern over minority sentiments, saying, "For the first time in modern history, minorities feel uncomfortable and feel scared living in India."
Concluding his speech, Rahul Gandhi made a personal pledge to defend Tamil language, culture, history, and tradition for as long as he lives. Earlier in the day, he offered condolences for the lives lost in the Virudhunagar firecracker unit explosion. His visit included additional public meetings in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts to rally support for DMK and Congress candidates.
