Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo is equally corrupt as Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Gandhi accused Banerjee of being involved in numerous corruption scandals, including the alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks and the Saradha chit fund scam.
Gandhi's Allegations
Rahul Gandhi asserted that the TMC chief has no moral authority to speak on corruption. "In corruption, Mamata Banerjee is in no way less than PM Modi. She has been involved in several scams, and the people of West Bengal are suffering due to her misgovernance," Gandhi said. He also criticized the TMC for its alleged involvement in the recent violence during panchayat elections in the state.
Comparison with PM Modi
Gandhi drew parallels between Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing both of protecting corrupt individuals within their respective parties. "Both PM Modi and Mamata Banerjee have failed to deliver on their promises of good governance. They are more interested in protecting their own interests," he added.
Political Reactions
The TMC responded sharply to Gandhi's remarks, accusing him of making baseless allegations. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "Rahul Gandhi should focus on his own party's internal issues rather than making false accusations against Mamata Banerjee. The Congress leader is frustrated due to his party's declining popularity."
Political analysts believe that Gandhi's attack on Banerjee is part of the Congress's strategy to position itself as the main opposition to the BJP, especially in states where the TMC is a strong contender. The Congress and TMC have often clashed over issues of corruption and governance.
Background
The Congress party has been consistently targeting the Modi government on corruption, and now it has extended its criticism to the TMC. This comes ahead of the 2026 general elections, where the Congress hopes to regain lost ground. The party has been trying to forge alliances with like-minded parties, but its relationship with the TMC remains strained.
Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, has been a vocal critic of the BJP and has positioned herself as a key opposition leader. However, her party has faced several corruption allegations, which the opposition parties have used to question her credibility.
