Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, accusing him of working to further external interests rather than focusing on national priorities. Speaking at a press conference in Dehradun, Gandhi alleged that the central government was involved in the 'looting' of Uttarakhand's natural resources, including minerals, forests, and water bodies.
Allegations of Resource Exploitation
Gandhi claimed that under the Modi administration, state resources were being exploited for private gains, with little benefit to the local population. He pointed to recent mining contracts and forest clearances as evidence of what he termed a 'systematic plunder' of the Himalayan state's wealth. 'The people of Uttarakhand are being deprived of their rightful share while corporations and external entities reap the benefits,' he said.
Political Reactions
The Congress leader also criticized the BJP-led state government for what he described as 'inaction' on environmental degradation and unemployment. He urged the central government to prioritize the welfare of Uttarakhand's residents over corporate interests. In response, BJP leaders dismissed Gandhi's allegations as baseless and politically motivated. State BJP spokesperson said, 'The central government has always worked for the development of Uttarakhand, and such accusations are a desperate attempt to divert attention from Congress's failures.'
Gandhi's remarks come ahead of the upcoming state elections, where both national and regional parties are expected to focus on local issues. The Leader of Opposition promised that if elected, Congress would implement a transparent policy for resource management and ensure that the state's natural wealth benefits its citizens directly.
