Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stirred a political storm on Thursday with his controversial remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a public rally in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. The comments drew immediate and sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which accused Gandhi of crossing all limits of decency and spreading misinformation.
Gandhi's Allegations
Addressing a large gathering in Raebareli, Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Modi government, alleging that the Prime Minister and Home Minister were responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in the country. He claimed that under their leadership, the nation was witnessing a rise in unemployment, inflation, and communal tensions. Gandhi specifically targeted Amit Shah, accusing him of misusing central agencies to target political opponents.
“The current government has failed on all fronts. Instead of addressing the real issues, they are busy dividing the society and suppressing dissent,” Gandhi said, adding that the opposition would continue to fight against what he termed as “dictatorial tendencies.”
BJP's Strong Rebuttal
The BJP was quick to respond, with party leaders condemning Gandhi’s statements as baseless and irresponsible. Union Minister and senior BJP leader Smriti Irani, who is also Gandhi’s political rival in Amethi, said that the Congress leader was frustrated due to the party’s declining popularity and was resorting to lies to stay relevant.
“Rahul Gandhi’s remarks are a clear reflection of his desperation. He has no agenda to offer the people of this country except spreading hatred and falsehoods,” Irani said at a press conference in New Delhi. She further challenged Gandhi to provide evidence for his allegations against Modi and Shah.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also weighed in, accusing Gandhi of “character assassination” and demanding an apology. “The nation has rejected the Congress party and its negative politics. Rahul Gandhi should apologize to the people of India for misleading them,” Patra said.
Political Fallout
The controversy comes ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in several states, where both parties are expected to engage in intense campaigning. Political analysts believe that Gandhi’s remarks could further polarize the political discourse, with the BJP likely to use them to consolidate its support base.
Meanwhile, the Congress party defended its leader, stating that Gandhi was merely highlighting the ground realities. “The BJP cannot tolerate the truth. Rahul Gandhi is speaking about the issues that matter to the common man,” said Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera.
The Raebareli rally was part of Gandhi’s ongoing campaign to connect with voters and revive the Congress party’s fortunes in Uttar Pradesh, a state that sends the highest number of MPs to the Lok Sabha.
