Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge launched sharp attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Italy visit and the economic situation in the country. Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at the Prime Minister for gifting toffees to Italian PM Giorgia Meloni during his Rome visit, saying people in India were facing economic difficulties while the Prime Minister was “laughing and filming reels”. In a post on X, Rahul alleged that farmers, youth, women, workers and small traders were struggling amid growing economic concerns.
Congress President's Criticism
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the government, alleging rising public debt, inflation, unemployment and weakening investor confidence. He claimed the public was facing “misery” while being asked to enjoy the “melody” of speeches and accused the Centre of creating an economic crisis.
Political Reactions and Context
The attacks come as India faces significant economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment rates. Rahul Gandhi's comments reference a viral video of PM Modi handing out candies to Meloni, which the Congress leader contrasted with the struggles of ordinary Indians. The opposition has been consistently critical of the government's economic policies, especially ahead of upcoming elections.
Kharge further stated that the Modi government has failed to address key issues such as farmer distress and job creation, instead focusing on publicity stunts. The Congress party has called for a comprehensive review of the economic situation and immediate measures to provide relief to affected sections of society.
