Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Chairs High-Level Meeting on Border Roads Organisation
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday presided over a crucial meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence, focusing exclusively on the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in New Delhi. The discussions centered on enhancing border infrastructure, strengthening defence preparedness, and advancing strategic connectivity projects across challenging terrains, according to an official government release.
Review of Border Roads Development Programme 2023–28
The meeting conducted a comprehensive review of the progress under the ambitious Border Roads Development Programme for the period 2023–28. This extensive programme encompasses more than 1,000 road and infrastructure projects, including new construction, upgradation, and maintenance works along India's sensitive border regions.
During the deliberations, Minister Singh emphasized that the primary objective of this programme is to establish robust all-weather connectivity in remote and high-altitude areas. This initiative is designed to significantly enhance operational mobility for defence forces and bolster overall defence preparedness against potential threats.
The minister also revealed that the BRO has been assigned a critical task of developing infrastructure along the approximately 1,600-kilometer Indo-Myanmar border. This strategic development is expected to substantially strengthen border management capabilities and improve security coordination in the northeastern region.
BRO's Expanding Role in Northeast and LWE-Affected Regions
Rajnath Singh highlighted the BRO's significant contributions in improving connectivity infrastructure in the North-East states and areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). He noted that these projects serve dual purposes: addressing critical security requirements while simultaneously fostering regional development and economic growth.
"The Border Roads Organisation has played a pivotal role in facilitating the mobility of our defence forces, while also working diligently to bring about positive transformation in the lives of local residents," Singh stated, according to the official statement.
The minister further elaborated that the BRO is increasingly adopting modern construction methodologies to enhance both the pace and quality of its work. This includes deployment of specialized high-altitude equipment, implementation of modular bridge systems, and utilization of precast technologies specifically designed for challenging environmental conditions.
Comprehensive Presentation on BRO's Achievements and Challenges
Director General of Border Roads, Lieutenant General Harpal Singh, presented a detailed overview to the committee members. The presentation covered the BRO's multifaceted role, major accomplishments over the years, operational challenges encountered in difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions, and the organisation's significant contributions to disaster management operations.
The committee was informed that since its establishment in 1960, the Border Roads Organisation has constructed an impressive network of infrastructure, including:
- Over 64,000 kilometers of roads
- 1,179 bridges of various types
- 22 airfields across strategic locations
- 7 major tunnels through mountainous regions
The meeting also addressed several persistent challenges facing the organisation, including limited working seasons due to harsh weather conditions, complexities in land acquisition processes, and requirements for environmental clearances. The BRO's ongoing focus on capacity enhancement and adoption of modern construction technologies was highlighted as key to overcoming these obstacles.
High-Level Participation in the Meeting
The significant gathering included Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat, and numerous other senior defence officials. Their collective presence underscored the strategic importance accorded to border infrastructure development and defence preparedness in India's national security framework.
