Rajnath Singh Honors Lalji Tandon on 91st Birth Anniversary in Lucknow
Union Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh paid heartfelt tributes to former governor and veteran BJP leader Lalji Tandon on his 91st birth anniversary this Sunday. Singh described Tandon as a symbol of integrity, courage, and unwavering public service, highlighting his profound impact on Indian politics and society.
Tributes at Book Release Event
Speaking at a program organized for the release of a book on Tandon, Singh emphasized that the late leader's life was deeply rooted in values and shaped by close associations with prominent nationalist figures such as Deendayal Upadhyaya and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He noted that Tandon's interpretation of secularism was based on sarva dharma sambhava, advocating equal respect for all religions rather than adopting Western concepts imposed on Indian society.
Addressing False Propaganda and Sharing Anecdotes
Singh referred to passages in the book that discuss what Tandon termed "false propaganda" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that truth ultimately prevailed. He shared compelling anecdotes from the book, including incidents involving leaders like Field Marshal Cariappa and Jagannath Rao Joshi. One dramatic story recounted a hijacking attempt at Lucknow airport, where former Prime Minister Vajpayee's personal intervention helped defuse the crisis, with Tandon present at the scene. Singh remarked, "These stories illustrated both Tandon's presence of mind and his courage during crises."
Legacy of Justice and Integrity
The Defence Minister highlighted Tandon's legacy beyond high office, recalling his opposition during the Emergency. Tandon openly protested the shifting of patients from KGMU to accommodate the delivery of the Governor's daughter, an act Singh termed symbolic of his lifelong stand for justice. Singh also praised Tandon's administrative decisions, such as taking action against illegal encroachments as urban development minister and refusing to engage in paid news during elections, which demonstrated his unwavering integrity.
Deep Connection with Lucknow and Pandemic Efforts
Singh emphasized Tandon's deep connection with Lucknow, describing him as a leader who embodied the city's culture and inclusiveness. "For him, Lucknow was not just a city but an extension of his soul," Singh said. Additionally, he highlighted Tandon's efforts during his tenure as governor, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he ensured food distribution to the needy. In Bihar, Tandon initiated measures to regularize university examinations and convocations, showcasing his commitment to public welfare.
The event served as a poignant reminder of Tandon's contributions, with Singh's words underscoring the enduring values of service and principle that defined his life and career.
