Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Honors Military Personnel at Times Samman Awards
In Lucknow, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered a powerful address at the Times Samman Awards ceremony organized by The Times of India on Saturday. He emphasized that the freedom and security enjoyed by every Indian citizen are direct results of the immense sacrifices made by soldiers and their families, stating that the nation owes them an eternal debt of gratitude.
Tribute to Valor and Service
Speaking at the event designed to honor military personnel and their families, Singh expressed his honor in participating in a celebration that recognizes the bravery and dedicated service of India's armed forces. He praised TOI for its initiative in acknowledging soldiers from across the country, noting that honoring these individuals represents a significant source of pride for society as a whole.
"I pay tribute to the unyielding courage that guards India's borders, the firm self-respect that beats in the hearts of the armed forces, and the deep spirit of service that defines every soldier," declared the minister. He further explained that "the ability of Indians to live and breathe freely is possible only because of the sacrifices of soldiers and the unwavering support of their families."
Recognizing Sacrifice Beyond Awards
Addressing decorated soldiers and their family members present at the ceremony, Singh acknowledged that the awards presented were merely a small expression of the nation's gratitude. He stressed that no honor or recognition could ever fully measure the monumental contributions these individuals have made to India's security and sovereignty.
The minister invoked the wisdom of Rabindranath Tagore, noting that true bravery manifests not in avoiding suffering but in remaining steadfast during adversity—a quality he observed abundantly in every soldier and their family members.
Remembering War Heroes and National Unity
Singh recalled the heroic stories of war legends including Major Somnath Sharma, Captain Vikram Batra, Abdul Hamid, and Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav. He described their narratives as enduring sources of inspiration that would continue to motivate future generations.
The Defence Minister emphasized that soldiers perfectly embody the principle of 'Service Before Self' and that their exceptional teamwork and unity should serve as a model for the entire nation to emulate. He highlighted that national cohesion among India's 140 crore citizens represents an essential foundation for transforming the country into a developed nation.
The Invisible Support System
Singh drew particular attention to the crucial yet often overlooked role played by soldiers' families, describing them as an "invisible support system" that provides the mental strength necessary for troops to perform their duties effectively. He underlined the collective responsibility all citizens share toward national security, urging the public to maintain discipline, unity, and vigilance against misinformation.
Defence Self-Reliance and Youth Inspiration
Highlighting India's progress in defence capabilities, Singh noted that the country's defence production and exports have experienced significant growth in recent years, simultaneously strengthening both national security and the economy. He concluded by encouraging young people to draw inspiration from the lives of brave soldiers and dedicate themselves to national service, asserting that national security represents not just the responsibility of armed forces but of every single citizen.
Media Responsibility and Nation Building
During his address, Rajnath Singh praised The Times of India for the credibility it has established over decades and its extensive reach across the country, acknowledging that responsible journalism plays a vital role in shaping public trust. However, he issued a significant warning regarding media practices.
The minister cautioned that media outlets must recognize the dangerous consequences of portraying sensitive national security issues irresponsibly, particularly when driven by sensationalism and TRP-focused content. He stressed that in the current climate, responsible journalism becomes absolutely essential.
Singh specifically mentioned that he has never had any complaints against The Times of India, appreciating its appropriate language, tone, and narrative approach. He urged all media organizations to ensure their reporting strengthens social unity rather than promoting division, emphasizing that the media must recognize its role as a nation builder while guiding public opinion with responsibility and integrity.
