The first major challenge before Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's new government appears to have been resolved after senior minister Ramalinga Reddy backed away from his resignation threat. Following hours of discussions, Shivakumar described the issue as a misunderstanding and said all differences had been settled. The episode stemmed from Reddy's dissatisfaction over portfolio allocation, particularly the Bengaluru Development Department.
Late-night talks between the two leaders, held at Shivakumar's residence, resulted in a breakthrough. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Shivakumar stated, 'Everything is settled. There was a misunderstanding, but now it is resolved. Ramalinga Reddy will continue in his position and work for the development of the state.'
Reddy, who had earlier submitted his resignation to the Chief Minister, withdrew it after the discussions. He expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying that the party leadership had addressed his concerns. 'I am happy that the Chief Minister listened to my issues. The party is united, and we will work together for the people of Karnataka,' Reddy said.
The disagreement had threatened to destabilize the newly formed government, which took office just weeks ago. Political analysts noted that the swift resolution indicated strong leadership from Shivakumar and the Congress party's ability to manage internal conflicts.
The Bengaluru Development Department, which Reddy had sought, is considered a key portfolio due to its control over infrastructure and urban development in the state capital. However, the department was allocated to another minister, leading to Reddy's displeasure.
With the row now settled, the government is expected to focus on its legislative agenda and fulfilling election promises. Shivakumar emphasized that the party remains cohesive and committed to good governance.
