Sanjay Raut Warns Delimitation Without Census Could Spark Southern State Opposition
Raut: Delimitation Without Census May Face Southern Opposition

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut Raises Alarm Over Delimitation Process

In a significant political development, Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut has labeled the ongoing issue of delimitation of Lok Sabha seats as highly contentious. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday, Raut emphasized that this critical process is being undertaken without conducting a proper Census, which he warned could trigger fierce opposition from southern states across India.

Delimitation Without Census Creates Constitutional Concerns

"The delimitation of Lok Sabha seats will create a serious situation in the country," Raut declared during his media interaction. "This issue is contentious and is being done without conducting the Census. There will be massive opposition to this by southern states." The MP's comments highlight growing concerns about the methodology and timing of this electoral boundary revision process.

Women's Reservation Act Receives Conditional Support

While addressing the delimitation controversy, Raut clarified his party's position on the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' or Women's Reservation Act. "There was no reason for our party to oppose the Women's Reservation Act," he stated, noting that the Shiv Sena (UBT) has never obstructed women's electoral interests. Raut proudly recalled that Maharashtra was the pioneering state to implement reservations for women in local governing bodies, establishing a progressive precedent for gender representation in Indian politics.

Congress Accuses BJP of Political Calculation

The Congress party has characterized the central government's approach as a "calculated strategy" coinciding with elections in five states. State Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe directly accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of employing the women's reservation bill as a political maneuver to advance delimitation ahead of crucial elections.

"The government had previously stated that women's reservation would be implemented after the Census," Londhe pointed out. "Now, suddenly, delimitation is being introduced under its name, revealing that delimitation is the actual priority." The Congress leader further alleged that this move could negatively impact reservations for Other Backward Classes, Dalits, and Adivasis, while southern states fear diminished political representation if population becomes the sole delimitation criterion.

NCP (SP) Highlights Sharad Pawar's Legacy in Women's Empowerment

In a separate statement, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) emphasized the historical contributions of party supremo Sharad Pawar to women's political participation. NCP (SP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase detailed Pawar's groundbreaking initiatives:

  • Implementation of 33% reservation for women in local self-government bodies during his tenure as Maharashtra Chief Minister, later increased to 50%
  • Advocacy for 50% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies as early as 2012
  • Steps to facilitate women's employment in the armed forces during his term as Defence Minister

"Sharad Pawar was a key architect of women's empowerment in governance," Tapase asserted, calling for proper acknowledgment of these pioneering contributions to gender equality in Indian politics.

The convergence of these political voices underscores the complex interplay between electoral boundary revision, census data, women's representation, and regional political dynamics as India navigates these significant constitutional and political questions.
