Joe Rogan Attends White House Event with Trump for Psychedelic Research Initiative
In a notable development, podcast host Joe Rogan made an appearance at the White House alongside former President Donald Trump. The event centered on the signing of an executive order aimed at advancing research into psychedelic drugs for mental health treatments. Rogan, known for his MAGA-aligned podcast, stood directly behind Trump in the Oval Office during the ceremony on Saturday.
Executive Order Focuses on Accelerating Psychedelic Therapies
The executive order signed by Trump is designed to expedite the research and regulatory approval processes for psychedelic-based therapies. These treatments are being studied for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, particularly among veterans. Trump emphasized the potential impact, stating, "Today’s order will ensure that people suffering from debilitating symptoms might finally have a chance to reclaim their lives and lead a happier life."
The order directs the Food and Drug Administration to streamline its review for treatments already in advanced clinical trials, including psychedelics. Trump specifically mentioned ibogaine, a psychedelic substance used in some countries for PTSD treatment, and indicated plans to explore expanded access through the Right to Try Act, which allows terminally ill patients to try experimental treatments.
Rogan's Role and Past Criticisms of Trump
Joe Rogan revealed that the initiative began after he shared information about psychedelic treatments with Trump via text message. Rogan recounted, "I sent him that information. The text message that came back: ‘Sounds great. Do you want FDA approval? Let’s do it.’ Literally that quick." He noted that discussions on this topic frequently occur on his podcast, where psychedelic therapies have been a recurring subject.
Despite his involvement, Rogan has been openly critical of Trump's foreign policy decisions, including recent military actions in Iran. At the event, Trump acknowledged this, describing Rogan as "a little bit more liberal" but added, "We all respect Joe. He’s a little bit more liberal than me and that’s okay."
Key Officials Present and Regulatory Changes
The signing ceremony included several high-profile officials, such as FDA Commissioner Martin Makary, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz. Makary highlighted the efficiency of the new program, stating, "Under this new program in this administration, drugs can get approved in weeks, not a year or year plus, but in weeks, if they are in line with our national priorities."
During the event, Trump also made light-hearted remarks about mental health treatments, joking, "Can I have some, please?" and adding, "I’ll do whatever it takes…I don’t have to be depressed. If you stay busy enough, maybe that’s what works too, that’s what I do."
This collaboration between Rogan and Trump underscores a bipartisan effort to address mental health issues through innovative therapies, despite political differences. The move signals a significant shift in federal policy towards exploring alternative treatments for widespread mental health conditions.
