RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Reflects on Sangh's Century of Growth in Nagpur Address
In a significant address in Nagpur, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat underscored the organization's remarkable growth over the past century, attributing its endurance solely to the unwavering dedication of its swayamsevaks (volunteers). Speaking at the unveiling of the book 'Rashtra Swaradhana' at Dr Hedgewar Smruti Mandir on Wednesday, Bhagwat firmly stated that the RSS has thrived not due to anyone else's grace or disfavour, but through the collective strength of its members.
Emphasizing Unity and Selfless Service
Bhagwat clarified that the Sangh does not seek personal credit for its achievements. "The intention is not to inscribe achievements in our own name in golden words, but to attribute them to society," he asserted. He urged those working to unite Hindu society to learn the importance of aligning "voice with voice and step with step." Drawing from a Sanskrit phrase, "Deva bhagam yatha purve...", he highlighted that just as gods achieved their goals through coordinated effort, society must advance in unison with a single voice and direction.
The RSS chief described the organization's 100-year journey as both "romanchkari" (thrilling) and "udbodhak" (enlightening), noting that its history offers valuable lessons for future endeavors. He emphasized that swayamsevaks have collectively invested their strength to build an organization capable of shaping the nation's direction, representing a formidable force in contemporary India.
The Role of Ghosh and Organizational Discipline
Bhagwat shed light on the role of the 'ghosh' (musical band) within the RSS's organizational structure, explaining that all divisions exist to inculcate "sanskar" (values). The musical wing, he said, adds an element of discipline and aesthetic appeal to physical training (sharirik), ensuring that public presentations by swayamsevaks are both coordinated and engaging. He stressed that maintaining high-quality standards in such activities is essential for the organization's integrity and impact.
On the topic of training, Bhagwat elaborated that physical exercises help shape the mind and foster coordination, which becomes a natural tendency through structured programs. While citing examples from sports like kabaddi, where swayamsevaks often excel due to their training, he clarified that the Sangh's objective is not to produce professional athletes but to build character and unity.
Artistic Excellence and Emotional Depth
Regarding the artistic aspect of ghosh, Bhagwat emphasized that precision alone is insufficient. "The act must be flawless, but it must also carry 'bhav' (emotion), which comes from within," he said. He added that Indian art traditions aim to create "satyam, shivam, sundaram" (truth, goodness, beauty), and the RSS is committed to upholding these principles in its work.
Call for Introspection and Future Expansion
Bhagwat called for introspection on whether present efforts match the dedication of earlier generations, urging continuous self-assessment. "It is important to reflect on what we have done and what needs to be done ahead," he remarked. He framed the centenary not merely as a celebration but as a pivotal opportunity to expand the organization's reach and deepen its societal work, reinforcing its mission for years to come.
This address in Nagpur serves as a testament to the RSS's enduring legacy and its focus on collective effort, discipline, and cultural values in shaping India's future.
