Senior IPS officer Sandeep Patil on Thursday assumed charge as Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Belagavi Northern Range. Outgoing IGP Dr Chetan Singh Rathore formally handed over charge during a brief function held at the IGP's office.
Immediate Review of Security and Crime Control
Soon after taking charge, Patil held meetings with senior officers to review law and order, crime control measures, border security, and progress in major cases. His proactive approach signals a focus on strengthening policing in the region.
Experience and Policing Style
Patil had earlier served as Superintendent of Police in Belagavi in the early 2010s. He is known for his firm yet people-friendly policing style, which has earned him respect among both subordinates and the public.
Strategic Importance of Belagavi Northern Range
The Belagavi Northern Range comprises five districts: Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, and Gadag. It shares borders with Maharashtra and Goa, making it one of the state's most sensitive regions. The zone frequently faces challenges such as inter-state crimes, narcotics trafficking, highway offences, illegal mining transport, cyber fraud, protests, and law and order duties during major events.
Expectations from the New IGP
Officials stated that Patil's appointment is expected to strengthen policing, intelligence coordination, and overall security management in this strategically significant border zone. His previous experience in the area and his reputation for effective policing are seen as assets in tackling the region's complex security issues.
The handover ceremony was attended by senior police officers and staff, who expressed confidence in Patil's leadership. The outgoing IGP, Dr Chetan Singh Rathore, was thanked for his service during his tenure.
