Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has criticised the FIR lodged against former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging selective action by authorities. Speaking to ANI reporters on Sunday, Raut questioned why similar cases were not registered against leaders accused of making inflammatory remarks in the past.
Referring to speeches made during previous election campaigns, Raut questioned why no action was taken against BJP leaders. He specifically cited former Union minister Anurag Thakur, asking why FIRs were not filed over remarks that had also drawn criticism for being provocative.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) MP further claimed that comparable speeches are frequently made by BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh, yet no legal proceedings are initiated against them.
Extends Support to TMC Chief
Backing Trinamool Congress chief, Raut described Mamata Banerjee as a seasoned and resilient politician. He alleged that political opponents were attempting to isolate her through multiple actions but asserted that opposition parties would continue to stand by her.
"Mamata Banerjee is a fighter politician. She is not someone who will be intimidated by FIRs," Raut said.
FIR Registered Over Alleged March Speech
The controversy follows the registration of an FIR against Banerjee by Kolkata Police. According to the complainant, Banerjee delivered a speech on March 9 that allegedly contained misleading statements capable of disturbing public order, affecting communal harmony, and creating unrest.
The FIR comes amid a turbulent phase for the Trinamool Congress. Following the party's recent electoral setback, internal dissent has reportedly intensified.
