The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of five judges for elevation as judges of the Supreme Court. The recommendations include four chief justices of various high courts and one senior advocate. This move aims to fill vacancies in the apex court and ensure the smooth functioning of the judiciary.
List of Recommended Judges
The Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India, has proposed the following names:
- Justice Rajesh Kumar, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court
- Justice Meera Sharma, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court
- Justice Arvind Singh, Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court
- Justice Kavita Nair, Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court
- Mr. Anil Tiwari, Senior Advocate
The recommendations have been sent to the central government for approval. Once approved, the new judges will take oath and begin their tenure in the Supreme Court.
Process of Elevation
The elevation of judges to the Supreme Court follows a detailed process. The Collegium considers seniority, merit, and representation from different regions and communities. The government may seek inputs from intelligence agencies before confirming the appointments.
This recommendation comes at a time when the Supreme Court is functioning with a strength of 28 judges against a sanctioned strength of 34. The new appointments will help reduce the backlog of cases and expedite justice delivery.
Reactions from Legal Fraternity
Legal experts have welcomed the recommendations, stating that the inclusion of a senior advocate as a direct appointee brings diversity to the bench. The move is also seen as a step towards gender parity, with two women judges among the recommended names.
Bar Council of India Chairman said, "These appointments will strengthen the apex court and ensure that the best legal minds are part of the judiciary."
The government is expected to process the recommendations expeditiously, and the new judges may be sworn in within the next few weeks.
