SC Seeks CBI Probe Into Cockroach Janta Party

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged activities of the so-called "Cockroach Janta Party" and the operation of fake advocates purportedly linked to the group. The petition comes amid a growing political controversy surrounding the viral digital campaign, which has rapidly gained traction online through memes and commentary on issues such as unemployment, education policy, and alleged examination paper leaks.

Background of the Controversy

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) emerged last week as a satirical movement, quickly amassing a significant following. The trend surfaced following a controversy over remarks allegedly made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during the hearing of a plea seeking senior designation for a lawyer. The CJP website was taken down on Saturday, prompting founder Abhijeet Dipke to accuse the government of "dictatorial behaviour" in a post on X.

Founder's Allegations

Dipke claimed that nearly 10 lakh people had signed up as members of the platform, which has gained rapid traction among millennials and Gen Z users. The organisation had recently launched an online campaign demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged systemic failures in the education sector and the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy. Dipke also alleged that he had received death threats following the campaign and claimed that, instead of taking action against those responsible for examination irregularities, authorities were targeting the satirical movement itself.

Movement's Reach

According to posts shared through backup social media handles, the movement stated that it had crossed "one million registered Cockroaches" within a week. Its Instagram accounts had amassed millions of followers before access was lost. The plea in the Supreme Court seeks to investigate the authenticity of these claims and the alleged involvement of fake advocates.
