APCC Chief Sharmila Slams Andhra Govt Over Healthcare Neglect and Aarogyasri Delays
Sharmila Attacks Andhra Govt Over Healthcare Neglect, Aarogyasri Dues

APCC Chief YS Sharmila Condemns Andhra Government's Healthcare Failures

In a strongly worded critique delivered on Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President YS Sharmila launched a sharp attack on the state government, accusing it of gross neglect of public healthcare and intentional delays in clearing critical dues under the Aarogyasri health insurance scheme.

Allegations of Misplaced Priorities and Financial Mismanagement

Sharmila alleged that while the government has been spending lavishly on events to appease Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has failed to allocate even minimal funds for essential healthcare services for the poor. She highlighted a stark contrast in financial priorities, noting that despite borrowing massive amounts for the development of Amaravati, the government has not cleared pending Aarogyasri dues amounting to Rs 3,000 crore.

Targeting Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directly, Sharmila accused him of prioritizing high-profile events over public welfare. She stated that nearly Rs 1,200 crore was spent on official programmes while essential health services were systematically neglected, calling this a fundamental failure of governance.

The Systematic Weakening of Aarogyasri Scheme

Describing Aarogyasri as a "lifeline scheme that saved millions of lives," Sharmila emphasized that it was originally introduced by her father and former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. She alleged that the current administration is now systematically weakening this crucial program through deliberate underfunding and mismanagement.

Sharmila pointed to specific evidence of deterioration, noting that services under the Aarogyasri scheme were suspended twice in the past two years alone. She characterized these suspensions as a "serious failure of governance" that directly endangers public health across Andhra Pradesh.

Privatization Concerns and Immediate Demands

The APCC chief further alleged that the government is attempting to privatize the Aarogyasri scheme under the guise of implementing a universal health scheme program. She warned that continued delays in releasing funds would cripple the entire healthcare system, leaving millions of vulnerable citizens without access to essential medical services.

Issuing a clear ultimatum, Sharmila demanded:

  • Immediate release of all pending Aarogyasri dues
  • Complete restoration of suspended medical services
  • Urgent consultations with hospital managements to address systemic issues

Budgetary Inconsistencies and Warning of Protests

Sharmila questioned why the government, which allocated Rs 4,000 crore in the budget for NTR health services, was hesitating to release funds for the Aarogyasri scheme. She characterized this inconsistency as evidence of misplaced priorities that favor political optics over genuine public welfare.

The APCC chief concluded with a stern warning, stating that if the government fails to act promptly to safeguard public healthcare, the Congress party will intensify protests and launch a statewide agitation. She emphasized that protecting healthcare access for Andhra Pradesh's citizens is non-negotiable and requires immediate governmental action.
