Ship stranded off Mumbai Manori coast amid heavy rains

Ship Runs Aground Off Manori Coast

A vessel has been stranded off the Manori coast near Mumbai as heavy rains continue to lash the region. The police have alerted the Indian Coast Guard to initiate rescue and relief operations, officials confirmed on Monday.

The alert was raised keeping in mind the rocky terrain of the area, with strong winds having made it unsafe for smaller vessels to approach the ship for assistance. The exact nature of the vessel and the number of crew members on board have not yet been disclosed.

Weather Conditions Hamper Rescue

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding coastal areas, predicting very heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching up to 60 km/h. These adverse weather conditions have complicated the rescue efforts, as the Coast Guard assesses the stability of the stranded ship.

Local fishermen reported spotting the vessel drifting towards the shore late Sunday evening. By early Monday, it had become lodged on the rocky seabed approximately 500 meters from the coastline.

Authorities on High Alert

Mumbai Police have cordoned off the beach area to prevent onlookers from approaching the danger zone. A Coast Guard spokesperson stated, "We are monitoring the situation closely. A team has been dispatched to evaluate the structural integrity of the vessel and plan the evacuation if necessary."

The incident comes as the city grapples with severe waterlogging and disruption of public transport due to the monsoon deluge. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
