Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Criticizes Modi Government Over Women's Reservation Act Delay
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched a sharp critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, addressing allegations leveled by the opposition and questioning the central government's commitment to implementing the Women's Reservation Act. Speaking to reporters in Mysore, Siddaramaiah emphasized that the Congress party has historically championed greater representation for women in elected bodies.
Historical Context and Constitutional Amendments
Siddaramaiah highlighted that it was a Congress-led government that introduced the landmark 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution, which established reservations for women in Panchayati Raj institutions. This move, he argued, demonstrates the party's longstanding dedication to gender equality and social justice.
Allegations Against the Modi Government
The Chief Minister directly challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of delaying the implementation of the Women's Reservation Act, which was passed in 2023. "The Women's Reservation Bill was passed in 2023; it should have been implemented immediately. What was the need to wait?" Siddaramaiah questioned, expressing frustration over the prolonged inaction.
He further alleged that PM Modi's attitude is discriminatory and not in favor of social justice, rejecting the Prime Minister's accusations that Congress and its allies committed feticide by opposing the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill. This bill was controversially linked to delimitation based on the 2011 census, a point of contention for many opposition leaders.
Delimitation and Regional Disparities
Siddaramaiah criticized the Delimitation Bill, which was recently opposed by opposition parties in the Lok Sabha. He pointed out that the bill proposed a 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats, which he argued would unfairly disadvantage South Indian states. "The states of South India have effectively implemented population control measures, while North Indian states have not. Naturally, this delimitation would benefit the North and harm the South," he explained.
The Chief Minister suggested that delimitation should only occur after a new census is conducted, ensuring a fair and updated basis for representation. He accused the government of playing politics by combining women's reservation with delimitation, noting that the BJP lacked the two-thirds majority needed to pass such measures independently.
Political Strategy and Electoral Confidence
In his remarks, Siddaramaiah expressed confidence in the electoral prospects of opposition alliances in South India. He predicted that the DMK-led alliance would secure victory in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly polls, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) would triumph in Kerala. This statement underscores the regional political dynamics at play.
Broader Implications for Social Justice
Siddaramaiah's comments reflect a broader debate on social justice and representation in Indian politics. By questioning why the BJP-led government did not implement women's reservation during its nearly 12-year tenure at the Centre, he called for immediate action under the 2023 Act. His allegations highlight ongoing tensions between the Congress and BJP over issues of equality and governance.
The government has consistently rejected these allegations, maintaining its commitment to social justice. However, Siddaramaiah's forceful critique adds to the growing discourse on the timely implementation of progressive legislation and the need for equitable political representation across India's diverse regions.
