Outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met the Congress leadership in New Delhi on Friday, a day after stepping down from the state's top post. During his meeting with Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath, Siddaramaiah expressed gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve Karnataka and confirmed that he had resigned as requested, according to sources.
Transition in Karnataka Politics
This development comes a day after Siddaramaiah stated that he had been offered a Rajya Sabha seat and a national role in the party, which he politely declined. "I'll continue in active politics. I have no interest in national politics," Siddaramaiah said on Thursday. He added, "I was also asked about the Rajya Sabha. I declined it. I want to remain in Karnataka politics."
Siddaramaiah's Demands and Future Plans
During the meeting, Siddaramaiah reportedly presented a fresh list of demands to Rahul Gandhi. Despite resigning due to an agreement with the party high command and his deputy DK Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah retains a strong grip on state politics. He discussed his future plans and the formation of the new government, seeking a cabinet berth and a key portfolio for his son Yathindra. He also submitted a list of loyalists he wants accommodated in the new cabinet.
Sources indicate that the Congress is likely to reorganize the party structure in Karnataka, a process in which Siddaramaiah is expected to play a major role.
Meetings with Party President
After meeting Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah also met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the new government formation and his future role. Kharge praised Siddaramaiah's public life, stating, "Shri Siddaramaiah's public life has consistently reflected dignity, compassion and a deep commitment to social justice. From humble beginnings to serving Karnataka twice as chief minister, he remained steadfast in his commitment to equality, harmony and the welfare of the marginalised."
Shivakumar's Meetings and CLP Schedule
DK Shivakumar separately met Kharge and KC Venugopal. Congress leader Saleem Ahmed announced that a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting is scheduled for Saturday at 4 pm in Bengaluru, to be attended by Venugopal and Surjewala. The decision on the new chief minister will be announced at this meeting, followed by the oath-taking ceremony schedule.
Ahmed commented on the smooth transition, saying, "As far as cabinet composition is concerned, a decision will be taken by the party high command and the chief minister. Everything is proceeding smoothly. The BJP may be surprised by the disciplined manner in which the Congress is handling the situation."
