The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged theft of donations from the Ayodhya Ram Temple has named Avinash Shukla as the prime accused. According to officials, the SIT has prima facie identified nearly 70 instances of alleged theft from the temple's counting room over a span of around 40 days.
Details of the Investigation
The SIT, formed by the Uttar Pradesh government, has been examining the temple's donation records and CCTV footage. Sources indicate that Shukla, a former employee of the temple trust, is suspected of having orchestrated the thefts. The total amount stolen is yet to be officially disclosed, but preliminary estimates suggest it runs into crores of rupees.
“The SIT has gathered substantial evidence against Shukla, including financial transactions and witness statements,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation. “We are also looking into possible links with other suspects.”
Timeline and Scope of Theft
The thefts are believed to have occurred between late May and early July 2026. The counting room, where devotees' offerings are stored, was reportedly accessed multiple times without authorization. The SIT has recovered some of the stolen funds from bank accounts linked to Shukla.
The Ram Temple Trust has cooperated with the investigation, providing all necessary records. “We are committed to ensuring full transparency and will take strict action against anyone found guilty,” said a trust spokesperson.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Shukla has been taken into custody and is expected to be produced before a local court. The SIT is also investigating whether other temple staff were involved. The case has sparked public outrage, with demands for stricter security at the temple.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has assured that the government will ensure a fair investigation. “No one involved in this sacrilege will be spared,” he stated.
