Sitharaman slams Congress for fear-mongering, obstruction

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a sharp attack on the Congress party on Tuesday, accusing it of engaging in 'fear-mongering' and 'obstruction' of the government's development agenda. Speaking at a press conference, she asserted that the opposition party was spreading baseless fears among the public to derail the government's initiatives aimed at economic growth and social welfare.

She further stated that the Congress had consistently hindered legislative progress and policy implementation, prioritizing political gains over national interest. Sitharaman's remarks came in response to criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had earlier alleged that the government's policies over the past 12 years had caused immense suffering to farmers, labourers, small traders, and the youth.

Gandhi's allegations

Rahul Gandhi, while addressing a rally, pointed out that the burden of the Centre's policies had fallen disproportionately on the most vulnerable sections of society. He claimed that industrialists and the wealthy had been shielded from the adverse effects, while the common people bore the brunt of economic hardships.

Gandhi emphasized that the government's focus on big business had neglected the needs of small-scale entrepreneurs and agricultural workers, leading to widespread distress. He urged the government to reconsider its approach and prioritize inclusive growth.

Government's response

Countering these allegations, Sitharaman highlighted several flagship schemes aimed at empowering small businesses, farmers, and the youth. She cited the success of the MSME sector under the current administration and noted that the government had provided significant financial support to small traders during economic downturns.

The Finance Minister also accused the Congress of spreading misinformation about the government's economic performance, pointing to data that showed improved GDP growth and reduced inflation. She urged the opposition to cooperate in nation-building rather than resorting to divisive tactics.

The exchange underscores the deepening political rift ahead of the upcoming elections, with both parties sharpening their rhetoric on economic policies and social justice.
