Union Minister Smriti Irani Condemns TMC Over Alleged Harassment of Rape Victim's Mother in Panihati
Union Minister Smriti Irani has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing the party of harassing Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar rape victim, while she was filing her nomination for the Panihati assembly constituency. In a statement to ANI, Irani described Debnath as a symbol of women's resilience and alleged that TMC supporters insulted and threatened her during the democratic process.
Allegations of Injustice and Political Intimidation
Irani questioned the TMC's commitment to justice, asking, "If TMC really wanted justice, why wasn't her daughter given justice? Why is this mother insulted even today when she is exercising her democratic right?" She emphasized that Debnath lost her daughter in a heinous crime and called it shameful that TMC goons continue to harass and insult her. Irani warned that the protectors of these goons will have to answer for their actions.
The Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas has become a focal point in this election, with BJP candidate Ratna Debnath contesting against TMC's Tirthankar Ghosh, the son of the five-time sitting MLA. Debnath, who is running to continue her late daughter's dream and advocate for women's safety, stated, "I chose to fight in this election for my daughter and for women whose security is under threat under the TMC government. Mamata Banerjee and her corrupt party leaders are responsible for my daughter's death."
Candidate Perspectives and Campaign Dynamics
Debnath added that she receives warm welcomes and assurances of support from voters, expressing her desire to serve the people despite not being a doctor like her daughter. On the other side, Tirthankar Ghosh, a first-term councillor in Panihati Municipality, expressed confidence in retaining the seat, focusing on development and his father's legacy. He told ANI, "People know in which manner and which concept they are giving votes. My focus is on development to continue the work of my father." Ghosh declined to comment on Debnath but highlighted BJP policies.
The Panihati constituency, part of the Dumdum Lok Sabha seat, includes wards 1–14, 16, 17, and 22 of Panihati Municipality. Both TMC and BJP have intensified their campaigns with rallies and wall writings, leading to heightened local tension due to the personal and political stakes involved.
Political Implications and Broader Context
Smriti Irani's intervention has sharpened the political edge of this contest. She portrayed Ratna Debnath as "a symbol of the way women have been exploited in West Bengal, the way they have been subjected to atrocities and injustice," and framed the election as an opportunity to uproot the oppressive TMC government. This has positioned Panihati as a high-profile battleground where issues of women's safety, accountability, and governance intersect with traditional political loyalties.
The outcome in Panihati is being closely monitored across West Bengal, as it may signal broader political trends ahead of the Assembly elections. The contest underscores deep-seated concerns about justice and security, making it a critical test for both parties in the region.
