The Tamil Nadu Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, has announced the portfolio allocation for its ministers. The Chief Minister has allotted one berth each to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which are set to join the government shortly. This will bring the Cabinet strength to its maximum capacity of 35 members.
Portfolio Distribution
The allocation reflects a balanced representation among coalition partners. Key portfolios have been assigned to senior leaders, ensuring administrative efficiency. The CM retains crucial departments including Home, Finance, and General Administration.
Coalition Partners
VCK and IUML have been given significant portfolios to address the interests of their constituencies. VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan is expected to take charge of Social Welfare, while IUML's K. M. Kader Mohideen may handle Minority Affairs.
The Cabinet expansion is scheduled for later this week, with the swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. The new ministers will assume office immediately after taking oath.
Political Significance
This move strengthens the ruling coalition and broadens its social base. The inclusion of VCK and IUML is seen as a strategic step to consolidate Dalit and Muslim votes ahead of local body elections.
The opposition has criticized the expansion, alleging that it is a compromise on governance quality. However, the government maintains that the new ministers are capable and experienced.
The Cabinet now awaits the formal induction of the two new members, after which it will function at full strength to address the state's developmental challenges.
