Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Seeks ECI Guidance on Vijay Film Release
Tamil Nadu chief electoral officer Archana Patnaik addressed reporters on Thursday, highlighting that the Election Commission of India (ECI) will determine whether the release of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay's upcoming film 'Jananayagan' falls under the purview of the model code of conduct. This announcement comes as the state prepares for upcoming elections, with Patnaik emphasizing the need for clarity in this unprecedented situation.
Unprecedented Scenario for Election Norms
Patnaik noted that this is the first time such a scenario has arisen in Tamil Nadu, where a political figure's film release coincides with election periods. "We will seek directions from the ECI in this regard," she stated during a brief interaction. When questioned about potential violations, she explained that the commission's decision will be crucial in setting a precedent for future cases involving media and political activities during election seasons.
Enhanced Security Measures for Polls
In addition to addressing the film release, Patnaik detailed the deployment of additional security forces across Tamil Nadu. Initially, 50 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) were deployed, and the Ministry of Home Affairs has now allocated an additional 250 companies. These reinforcements are scheduled for induction on April 6 and April 13, bolstering security ahead of the polls to ensure a smooth and safe electoral process.
EVM and VVPAT Randomization Process
The Election Commission will conduct randomization of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) on March 23. These devices are designated for use in the April 13 polls, with the process aimed at maintaining transparency and integrity in the voting system. Patnaik reassured that all necessary steps are being taken to uphold electoral fairness.
This development underscores the evolving challenges in enforcing election norms, particularly with the intersection of entertainment and politics. The ECI's forthcoming decision on Vijay's film is eagerly awaited, as it could influence how similar cases are handled in future elections across India.
