Tamil Nadu Election Candidates File Detailed Asset Affidavits
In the lead-up to the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, key political leaders have submitted their nomination papers along with detailed affidavits declaring their personal and family assets. These disclosures, mandated by the Election Commission of India, provide a transparent view of the financial standings of candidates contesting from various constituencies.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami's Declaration
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who is contesting from the Edappadi constituency, has declared his personal assets worth Rs 50.86 lakh and liabilities at Rs 17 lakh in his latest election affidavit. This marks a notable decrease from his 2021 assembly election affidavit, where he declared personal assets worth Rs 6.7 crore and liabilities at Rs 29.7 lakh. The current filing shows only movable assets in his name, with no immovable property listed.
According to the affidavit, his wife P Radha possesses assets worth Rs 5.61 crore, which include both movable and immovable property. Palaniswami's asset disclosures are anticipated to undergo close scrutiny by political rivals during the election campaign.
AIADMK Leader S P Velumani's Asset Growth
AIADMK leader and Thondamuthur candidate S P Velumani declared that he and his family members together hold assets worth Rs 13.08 crore. This comprises Rs 6.93 crore in movable assets and Rs 6.15 crore in immovable assets. In comparison, his 2021 affidavit listed total family assets of Rs 5.59 crore, with Rs 2.27 crore in movable assets and Rs 3.32 crore in immovable property. The latest declaration indicates a substantial increase of Rs 7.49 crore over the past five years.
DMK Candidate V Senthil Balaji's Financial Status
DMK leader and Coimbatore South candidate V Senthil Balaji declared that he and his family members possess assets worth Rs 4.54 crore. Of this total, Rs 3.19 crore is in movable assets, while Rs 1.35 crore is in immovable property located in the Karur district. In the previous election, he had declared assets worth Rs 2.92 crore, including Rs 1.82 crore in movable assets and Rs 1.10 crore in immovable assets. This represents an increase of Rs 1.62 crore over the five-year period.
BJP Leader Vanathi Srinivasan's Property Details
BJP leader and Coimbatore North candidate Vanathi Srinivasan also submitted a comprehensive property declaration along with her nomination papers. According to the affidavit, she owns immovable assets worth Rs 3.5 crore, while her husband holds immovable assets valued at Rs 4.05 crore. Her movable assets were declared at Rs 2.16 crore, and her husband's movable assets stand at Rs 3.62 crore.
These affidavits play a crucial role in ensuring electoral transparency, allowing voters to assess the financial backgrounds of candidates. The declarations are expected to be a focal point in the ongoing political discourse as Tamil Nadu prepares for the upcoming elections.
